When You Cannot Sing…

I spent the last week at CMS Summer School, hanging out with teenagers and attempting to navigate the weirdness that is a conference made up entirely of kids who know all the answers and seeing them grapple with their faith in the midst of a hyper-Christian personal world. We sang a lot, because singing is good… but there were a few days when I couldn’t bring myself to sing, and I noticed the same in some of the teenagers.

So, I wrote a poem. I don’t write them much because it’s a written form that I don’t feel confident in. But here it is, anyway…

When You Cannot Sing

When you cannot sing

because your heart is heavy

IMG_3657.JPGand your soul is weary…

Do not despair.

He will be your song.

When you cannot sing

because your life is so out of tune

to the song you want to bring…

Do not despair.

He will bring you back to Him.

When you cannot sing

because you have sung too long

and your voice is aching from the effort…

Do not despair.

He will give you strength.

When you cannot sing,

keep humming the tune

keep murmuring the lyrics

keep going until you can sing…

Because this song is not the same without you.
