Matthew 3:16And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him
There are times when God gives us pretty obvious signs to confirm something. For example, at some points in my life just before I’ve done something stupid, a friend has called me to catch up. With no prompting at all. I’m convinced that this is God working through other people. But then, there are signs that would be impossible to refute.
Like what, you say?
How about the baptism of Jesus? Does that work for you? John baptised Jesus and well, Matthew 3:16 (and 17) happened. Matthew is full of signs that would show the Jewish readers of it that Jesus was the Messiah that they had been anxiously waiting for and a lot of those come from the Old Testament. I don’t know if the baptism is in there, but I can’t ignore the fact that when Jesus was baptised, God placed his seal of approval on His son. And it would have been epic.
I don’t know how much of it is to be taken literally or how much is a metaphor, but the fact remains that John the Baptist got to witness the move epic baptism ever.
And you know what? Here’s something even more epic that takes us out of the parameters of Matthew 3:16 but it’s something that struck me when I was told. Jesus stood in our place as disgraceful so that we would be able to stand in his place as pure. And because of this, the words God speaks in Matthew 3:17 are true of us.
