Save us from these comforts.
Break us of our need for the familiar
Spare us any joy that’s not of You
And we will worship You
There is something in music that cuts right to the core of our beings and brings out emotions that we didn’t necessarily expect to me there. Sometimes we will sing along with a smile and other times hold a pillow and cry at the tragic familiarity of the lyrics. For me, I often feel like a song is God’s way of connecting with me when I’ve put up barrier after barrier to keep him out. Music is how he breaks away those walls, and I am grateful.
Recently I’ve been listening to some more obscure musicians – one of whom is Carlos Whittaker, and the rest is free downloads from Come&Live or NoiseTrade. The chorus that is quoted above struck me in a big way. It strikes me that while surviving suffering had been my main mode of living for so long, that if my expectation is that God will one day bring me to a place where there is no discomfort then I have signed up for following the wrong guy.
Being a Christian… Serving & loving God… means that comfort is secondary to everything else. Save us from these comforts. Break us from our need for the familiar. We want comfort and God wants o challenge us, to grow our character…
And through a song he reminded me of that.
What’s God taught you through a song?
